I'm in Melbourne and I'm not even really sure what I'm doing here. I came down to see Kirsten from Portland, who I met last week, and to check out the Rainbow Serpent party. It was a move made on a whim and based on inner pull, just like this entire journey. However, I'm feeling slightly confused because I don't yet understand the decision. I need to remember to be present and to relax when I don't understand what is going on and why I've made a move. I get really impatient when I don't understand why I have been pulled to a place even though it is always eventually revealed to me and understanding is eventually reached.
I will be here for one week and then will most likely travel back to Byron Bay or up through the middle of the country through the outback. I have been feeling a strong pull to go into the outback but I am a little scared to do it. I know very little about the land, the flora, and the fauna and my backpack is VERY heavy. I thought I was traveling light but I am probably going to have to ditch many of my possessions. I have a lot of books with me that will probably need to go and half of my clothes will need to go. My pack weighs 46 pounds and I'd like to drop it down to less than 30.
I met a cool guy from Brazil and an awesome girl from South Africa. She is an absolutely beautiful girl, inside and out, and we connected right away. We share a lot of similar interests and mindsets and thus had lots to talk about. She was traveling with the Brazilian guy and he had lots of interesting things to say about psychotropic medicines, including Ayahuasca. He shared an interesting metaphor for life which I have never heard before and perhaps I'll post it here at a later date. He's living in a farming community near Byron Bay and I may meet up with him later on down the road.
I went on a 1 hour tour with a bushwacker dude who knew tons about the species of plants and animals in Australia. He pointed out plants that were useful for food, medicine, water, and even toilet paper. He also talked about several useful observations such as animal roads. All animals travel via roads and if you are observant, you can find these roads and tell which animals travel on them and then have a better chance of encountering something on a hunting trip. I got to practice throwing his spear and was consistently hitting within a 6 inch radius from about 15-20 feet away. If I was really focused, I might be able to hit that opossum in the outback and give myself a decent meal for the night. At this point, I won't be able to count on those type of skills and am going to have to cart around some food. I have always loved learning about survival and one of my dreams is to possess enough knowledge to be able to live out in the bush on my own without supplies.
I'm trying to keep my posts shorter so people can have half a chance at actually keeping up with me. More to come soon.
